The clip is from a programme shown on Qatar tv. These settings are called ‘jalsaat’ (s: jalsa) and they’re social occasions where there’s music, singing and dancing. In a relaxed home setting with only the family attending, tea, coffee and sweets are served and people will perform songs to entertain each other. However if there are important guests or its a formal function then professional musicians/dancers are usually employed. The guests at a jalsa can sit and enjoy the music or get up and dance as they like.

Zizi Mustafa (1984)

The fabulous Zizi Mustafa in a scene from the 1984 comedy ‘Meen feena al harami’ (Who amongst us is the thief?). This film’s also known as ‘Double Trouble’ as the lead actor Adel Imam (sometimes written Emam) plays a double role as twins. One of the twins is a thief and the other a regular guy. Also starring are actresses Sherihan and Farida Saif el Nasr.

Shweiker (1967) شويكار

Shweiker dances in a scene from the 1967 Egyptian comedy ‘Agazet Gharem’ (أجازة غرام). It turns out to be only in the imagination of her husband who dances with her played by Egyptian comedy actor Fuad al Mohandes. al Mohandes was Shweiker’s husband in real life at the time.
The film tells the story of Magdi and Leila played by al Mohandes and Shweiker. Leila is a doctor with a demanding obstetric practice, she’s working long hours and Magdi feels neglected. Living next door are Elham and Sabri played by Nagwa Fouad and Salaah Nazmy. Sabri is often travelling, including on Elham’s birthday, and as a result she feels neglected. Long story short, there are unexpected returns, chases, disguises, cross dressing, disclosures and finally a happen ending. Also starring were Hussein Ismail, Ragaa Sadek, Samia Mohsen and Naima Wasfi.

Omar al Gizawy (1952) عمر الجيزاوي

This is Egyptian actor/singer/dancer Omar al Gizawy (1917-1983) performing in a scene from the 1952 film ‘El Zuhur el Fatina’ (Charming Flowers الزهور الفاتنة ) which starred Taheya Karioka and Faten Hamama.
Born as Sayed Omar Sayed Salem, Omar al Gizawy routinely played the part of a sweet, naïve country boy from the Saiid. Actors Mahmoud el Meliji (R) and Farid Shawki (L) are the two men at the bar in this scene. Also starring were Shokry Sarhan, Fardous Mohamed and Hussain Riad.

Soheir Ramzy (1972) سهير رمزي

Actress Soheir Ramzi dances in a scene from the 1972 film ‘Waladi’ (My Son ولدى) in which she starred along with Farid Shawki (the man sitting at the bar) and Tawfiq al Deqn (who enters the club with his gang).
Trivia: Soheir Ramzy is the daughter of screen actress Doria Ahmed. Soheir retired from acting in 1992 but returned in 2003 and now wears hijab.
