Nadia Lotfi (1969)

This is Egyptian actress Nadia Lotfi dancing in the 1969 Egyptian film ‘Abi foq al Shagara‘ (My Father is Up a Tree أبي فوق الشجرة) in which she starred as Firdous, a dancer who has an affair with Abdel Halim Hafez’s character Adel. Also starring were Emad Hamdy as Kamal who’s Adel’s father and Mervat Amin as Amal. The film was a huge success but was the last production in which Abdel Halim Hafez appeared. He died in London in March 1977 where he’d gone for treatment for the water borne disease bilharzia to which he had been exposed as a youngster. He’s buried at the Al Rifa’i Mosque in Salah el Din Square near the Citadel in Cairo.

Saeed Abdel Ghani (1982) سعيد عبدالغني

This is a wedding scene featuring tahtib performed by a male dancer. The scene’s from the 1982 Egyptian drama ‘Al Salakhana’ (The Slaughter House السلخانة ) but unfortunately it all ends very badly for the male dancer played by Egyptian actor Saeed Abdel Ghani.  The singer at the very beginning of the scene is Ahmed Adaweya.  The film starred Adel Adham (at the back wearing blue), Mohamed Reda (the actor not the dancer) and Madiha Kamal.  Also starring was Nagwa Fouad who’s in the audience in this scene wearing a red striped galabeya.  Nagwa Fouad’s shamadan dance from this movie is available on this channel.   Samir Ghanem and Leila Hamada play the bride and groom in this scene.

Hayatim (1982) هياتم

This scene features Alexandria born dancer and actress Hayatim and is from the 1982 Egyptian film “Al Aqwyaa” (The Mighty or The Strongest الأقوياء). This is a drama with an all-star cast including Madiha Yousri, Ezzat El Alaily and Naglaa Fathi. The film also starred Rushdi Abaza who had been married to both Taheya Karioka and Samia Gamal. Rushdi Abaza died in 1980 during filming of this production and his remaining lines were spoken by well known Egyptian actor Salah Nazmi who’s never seen onscreen.

Fifi Abdu (1982) عبده‎ فيفى

This is Egyptian superstar Fifi Abdu in a scene from the 1982 Egyptian film ‘Quench the Fire‘ (Min Yotfe el Nar من يطفئ النار ) in which she has three costume changes. The film starred Lebanese singer Walid Toufik who is the singer with her. The film also starred Egyptian actresses Raghda and Athar el Hakim and screen legend Farid Shawki. The writer and director of the film was Mohamed Salman who moved to Cairo from Lebanon after receiving his degree and became a noted singer in 1950s Egyptian films. He appeared with dancers Katy, Hager Hamdi and Horeya Mohamed amongst others. He was married to fellow singer Najah Salam.
Trivia: Walid Toufik was born in Tripoli, Lebanon and had his ‘big break’ appearing on the Lebanese tv talent show ‘Studio el Fan’. He moved to Egypt and his career really took off from there.

Here’s a performance by Egyptian actress and dancer Saeeda Galal who, in this clip, is a Mona al Saeed-lookalike. The scene is from the 1979 Egyptian film ‘The Curse of Time’ (Laenet al Zaman لعنة الزمن). The film starred Farid Shawki, Adel Adham, Poussy and Hussien el Sherbini.

Azza Sherif (1983) عزة شريف

This scene is from the 1983 Egyptian film ‘Al Motasawel‘ (The Beggar المتسول) and features Egyptian born dancer Azza Sherif. The singer is Ahmed Adaweya. The film starred Adel Imam and Esaad Younes who play the bride and groom in this scene. The woman in the blue galabeya who tries to get up to join Azza Sherif is former dancer Hayatim who plays a leading role in the movie.
Trivia: Azza Sherif was born in 1947 and was married for several years to the Egyptian singer Katkot al Amir.
