Zeinat Olwi is the bellydancer in this scene from the 1959 Egyptian comedy film ‘Secret Police’ (البوليس السرى ) which starred Ismail Yassin, Abdel Salem Al Nabulsi, Zeinat Sedki and Riad Algosbjy. The film is also known as ‘Ismail Yassin in the Secret Police’.
Zeinat Olwi dances in a scene from the 1953 film ‘Fael Khair’ (The Benefactor). Like many bellydancers of that time Zeinat Olwi started out working in the nightclub of Badia Masabni first as a chorus line dancer and later as a soloist. A lifelong heavy smoker, Zeinat died in 1988 following a massive heart attack.
The film starred Sabah (with the handbag looking out the window), Ismail Yassine (in the beige jacket in the front row at the men’s party and also in drag, second from left, at the women’s party) and Zomoroda (the woman sitting in the car. Her name means ‘Emerald’). The singer in this clip is Mohammed Fawzi. He was the brother of actress Huda Sultan and composer of the music for the Algerian national anthem.
Egyptian bellydancer Zeinat Olwi dances in a scene from the 1957 film ‘Ismail Yassin in the Navy’ (اسماعيل يس في الأسطول) which starred comedian Ismail Yassin (of course), Zeinat Sedki (the lady who gets up to dance), Zahrat al Ola, Mahmoud al Meliji (the groom) and a very young Ahmed Ramzi. Also starring was Riad El Kasabgy who reprises his role as IY’s nemesis, Shawish Attia.
Egyptian bellydancer Zeinat Olwi dances in a scene from the 1957 film ‘Al Motahm’ (Accused المتهم). The film starred Sharifa Maher, Tawfik Ismail, Mahmoud al Meliji and Riad Hussein.
Zeinat Olwi dances and Muharram Fouad sings in this wedding scene from the 1966 Egyptian film ‘Al Zawj al Azeb’ (The Bachelor Husband الزوج العازب). The film starred Farid Shawki, Hind Rostom and Mahmoud al Meligi and Naemat Mokhtar who’s in a non-dancing role. This film tells the story of Ashour (Shawki) who routinely divorces one of his four current wives so he can marry any woman who takes his fancy. In this scene he’s married Hind Rostom who doesn’t yet know about the other wives. Nemat Mokhtar who was well known as a dancer plays the non-dancing role of one of the wives.
Zeinat Olwi dances in a scene from the 1960 Egyptian movie ‘Ishaet Hob’ (Rumour of Love or Training for Love إشاعة حب) which starred Omar Sharif just before he hit the big time in Hollywood in ‘Lawrence of Arabia’. Also starring were Soad Hosny, Youssef Wehbi, Hind Rostom and Abdel Monem Ibrahim.
Egyptian bellydancer Zeinat Olwi dances in a scene from the 1958 drama ‘Kahraman’ (كهرمان) which starred Huda Sultan, Yehia Shaheen and Abdel Menan Ibrahim.
Trivia: The film’s title ‘Kahraman’ means amber.
TheCaroVan’s YouTube channel is no more. The channel featured short clips of bellydancers from the Middle East and occasionally singers, usually in scenes or clips taken from old Egyptian and Lebanese movies some as far back as the 1930s. Full movies were never uploaded.
TheCaroVan YouTube account has been terminated after receiving copyright demands from companies and copyright organisations who claimed the ownership of some of the clips and/or the accompanying music. While some of the claims were from entities who, after a minimal amount of research proved to be non-existent, some claims and organisations were legitimate and if you were a regular visitor to TheCaroVan you would have noticed that in the past, clips has been removed in compliance.
In the end, TheCarovan account was terminated due to a take-down notice by a company in France who claims to own the copyright to the 1955 Egyptian film ‘Sigarah wa Kas’ (A Glass and a Cigarette) which features dancing by Samia Gamal. Interestingly enough there is at least one other company who claims to own the worldwide copyright of this same movie.
I removed the offending clip yesterday, immediately on receiving the notice, but that wasn’t good enough apparently and the account has been terminated. As a result the channel and its research and information that more than 6,000,000 viewers had accessed, is now lost.
So, long story short, TheCaroVan is no more and I am now ‘An individual whose account has been closed [is] prohibited from accessing, possessing or creating any other YouTube account.’
Ah well, as someone who lives in the Middle East, as you can imagine, we have one or two other things to worry about at the moment…..
Zainat Olwi and Mohamed Roshdy in a scene from ‘Al Zawj al Azeb’ (The Bachelor Husband). This 1966 film starred Farid Shawki as a man who routinely divorces one of his four current wives so he can marry any woman who takes his fancy. He divorces one of the wives so he can marry Hind Rostom’s character Azhar and the scene in this clip is at their wedding. Azhar’s unaware that he has other wives and only meets them later.
This is bellydancer Zeinat Olwi performing in a scene from the 1954 Egyptian film ‘Al Naas Maqamaat’ (Class Distinctions الناس مقامات ). The film starred matinee idol Shukri Sarhan along with Mahmoud el Meligi, Doria Ahmed, Samiha Tawfik, Hind Rostom and Lebanese born actress Alwiya Gamil.
Trivia: Actors Mahmoud el Meligi and Alwiya Gamil were married from 1939 until el Meligi’s death in 1983. In 1963 el Meligi took a second wife, a young actress, but the story is that Gamil gave him a ‘her or me’ ultimatum and he quietly divorced his second wife.
