Taheya Karioka and Farid al Atrache (1942)

This is Taheya Karioka and Farid al Atrache in a scene from the 1942 Egyptian film, “Dreams of Youth” (أحلام الشباب Ahlam al Shabab). The film starred Farid al Atrache as a man, co-incidentally named Farid, who fancies his neighbour’s niece Elham (Madiha Yousri). He gets to know Elham by teaching her to play the piano. Elham’s parents have both died and now she lives with her aunt played by the wonderful Marie Munib. Taheya Karioka plays Bahia, a dancer who tries, but fails, to make Farid fall in love with her. The film also starred Hassan Fayek and Abbas Fares.

Taheya Karioka (1942) كاريوكا‎ تحية

This is Taheya Karioka in a wedding scene from the 1942 Egyptian film “Dreams of Youth” (أحلام الشباب Ahlam al Shabab). She plays the part of Bahia, a dancer who tries but fails to make Farid al Atrache fall in love with her, In this scene she’s hired unknowingly to dance at the wedding of Farid and Elham played by Madiha Yousri. Everything goes along fine until Taheya realises who the groom is. The bride’s aunt is played by the wonderful Marie Munib who’s on the left of screen with the feather in her hair.

Trivia: The ‘Haaretz’ newspaper in Israel reports that in September 1962 the Edison Theatre in Jerusalem screened the Farid al Atrache film “Eternal Melody”(Lahn al khulud”). The audience was incensed to discover that Farid’s songs were not presented in their entirety in the movie and demanded their money back. When this was refused they smashed seats and broke windows in the theatre lobby.

Houriya Mohamed (1942) حورية محمد

This is Houriya Mohamed in a scene from the 1942 Egyptian film ‘Bahbah in Baghdad’ (Bahbah fi Baghdad بحبح فى بغداد ) which starred Fawzi El Gazaierli, Mahmoud Shoukoko, Bishara Wakim and Mahmoud al Meliji. The story of the time is that Houriya Mohamed, though once close to Taheya Karioka, developed a mutual dislike (I’m being circumspect here….) to the point where Houriya (and/or her mother) destroyed one of Taheya’s costumes and things went downhill from there…..
Trivia: Houriya Mohamed was married to Egyptian screen actor Emad Hamd. She was followed by Fathiya Sherif (one of Badia Masabni’s monologists) then famous Egyptian singer Shadia and finally by screen actress Nadia al Gendi. Busy boy.

Legendary bellydancer Taheya Karioka performs in a scene from the 1942 Egyptian film ‘Aheb al Ghalat’ (I Like Mistakes أحب الغلط) which starred Anwar Wajdi, Hussein Sidqi, Fardous Mohammad and Ismail Yassin.
Taheya plays a dancer named Badawia who falls in love with Alawi (Sidqi), a rich man’s son who’s trying to be successful in his own right as a music composer. The father refuses his son’s request to marry the dancer. Subsequently the father has a heart attack and is nursed back to health by the dancer. Badawia tells Alawi that she has fallen in love with someone else but the father realises what a good hearted person she is and then he gives his consent to his son and the dancer to marry.

A group of bellydancers performing at a wedding party in a scene from the 1942 Egyptian film ‘Bint Zawat’ (Daughter of the Aristocrats  بنت ذوات). The film starred Youssef Wehbi, Raqia Ibrahim, Bishara Wakim and Leila Fawzi.
Trivia: Leila Fawzi was Anwar Wajdi’s second wife.

Egyptian bellydancers (1942)

This scene is from the 1942 Egyptian film ‘Ala Masrah Al Hayat’ (The Theatre of Life على مسرح الحياة). The film starred Anwar Wajdi, Hussein Riad, Rawheya Khaled, Fardous Mohamed and Amina Sherif. The singer is رئيسه عفيفى Samia Gamal is credited as appearing in this film so I guess she must be one of the backing dancers. Can anyone spot her?
