Samia Gamal (1950) جمال‎ سامية

This is Egyptian legend Samia Gamal dancing in a third clip from the 1950 Egyptian movie ‘Akher Kedba’ (The Last Lie آخر كدبة). The male singer is Syrian born Farid al Atrache who was her partner both on and off screen for many years. Appearing with them in part of the clip is Ismail Yassin who was a famous Egyptian comedian. Like many other entertainers of that era, Ismail Yassin started his career in the nightclub of Badia Masabni. The film tells the story of Samir and Samira (al Atrache and Gamal). Samira is jealous of Kiki another bellydancer. Kiki gives Samir a broken necklace and asks him to arrange for its repair. Samira finds the necklace and thinks its a gift for her from Samir. In due course Kiki asks for her necklace back!
The film also starred Stefan Rosti, Ismail Yassin, Aziz Othman and Camelia.

Nabaweya Fahmy (1950) نبوية فهمي

This scene is from the 1950 Egyptian comedy film, ‘Leilat al Dokhla’ (The Wedding Night ليلة الدخلة) and features Alexandria born bellydancer Nabaweya Fahmy, who seems to have appeared in only 3 movies between 1950 and 1953 and nothing more. This film starred Ismail Yassin, Hassan Fayek, Samiha Tawfik, Magda and Abdel Fattaḥ al Qaṣri. The two ladies sitting on the chairs are actresses Aziza Badr and Zakeya Ibrahim. The film tells the story of two bachelor barbers who arrange with a matchmaker to have a double wedding to marry their sweethearts who are sisters. On the wedding night the grooms find that their matchmaker has married them to two other, shall we say ‘less attractive’, women.

Taheya Karioka (1950)(2) كاريوكا‎ تحية

Taheya Karioka dances in another scene from the 1950 Egyptian comedy ‘Al Batal’ (‘The Champion’ or ‘The Hero’ البطل). The central character in the film is Batal (Ismail Yassin) and he’s been mistakenly told that he has only a week to live. As a result, he hurriedly marries his fiancée Sharbat played by Shadia and this scene is set at their wedding. Batal has hired Toha the bellydancer, played by Taheya Karioka, to dance at the wedding but in order to save money as he thinks he’s going to die very shortly, he’s also hired a troupe of professional funeral mourners to perform at the same time.

This scene is from the 1950 Egyptian comedy film ‘Al Battal’ (‘The Champion’ or ‘The Hero’ البطل). The film starred Egyptian comedian Ismail Yassin along with Shadia and Zeinat Sedki. This scene is set in a nightclub where Toha the bellydancer, played by Taheya Karioka, performs.
Trivia: The elderly man in the audience wearing the fez and enjoying the performance greatly is Egyptian character actor Mohamed Kamal Elmasry (1886-1966).

Hager Hamdi (1950) هاجر حمدى

This is a scene from the 1950 Egyptian romance ‘Al Anissa Mama’ (The Young (or Unmarried) Mother الآنسة ماما) which starred Lebanese singer Sabah (1927-2014) along with Mohamed Fawzi (1918-1966) and Ismail Yassin (1912-1972). The dancer in this scene is Hager Hamdi (1924-2008).
Trivia: Mohamed Fawzi was the real life brother of Egyptian singer/actress Huda Sultan.

Samia Gamal dances and Souad Makawee sings in a 1950 film ‘Asmar wa gameel’ (Dark and Handsome أسمر وجميل). The man with the moustache is a well known Egyptian comedian of the time, Mahmoud Shekuku, who was usually known by just his surname. The film also starred Mahmoud Abdul Aziz, Marie Munib and Mohamed al Bakker.

The word ‘asmar’ means ‘brown’.
