Lula Abdu (1955) لولا عبده

This is very short clip of Egyptian dancer and singer Lula Abdu (also spelt Lola Abdou) performing in a wedding scene from the 1955 Egyptian film ‘Ard al Hawa’ (Age of Love عهد الهوى ). The film starred Farid al Atrache (post Samia), Mariam Fakreddine, Abdelsalem al Nabulsi and Yousef Wehbi.

Egyptian bellydancer Lola Abdu (also spelt Lula) dances with comedian Ismail Yassin in a scene from the 1952 film ‘Qaleel al Bakht’ (The Unlucky One قليل البخت) which starred Shadia who plays an entertainer in Alexandria named Bolbola. She meets Hussein played by Kamal al Shinnawi and they fall in love. Unfortunately Bolbola’s cousin Elham played by Zomoda sets her sights on Hussein and tells him lies about Bolbola. Elham then falls in love with Monir played by Mahmoud al Meliji who dumps Elham and she goes mad as a result. Hussein leaves town and eventually Bolbola commits suicide. Years later Hussein returns and meets Bolbola’s daughter (also played by Shadia).

Lula Abdo (1952) لولا عبده

Lula Abdo sings and dances in a scene from the 1952 film ‘El Zuhur el Fatina’ (The Charming Flowers الزهور الفاتنة ). Tahiya Karioka who’s one of the stars of the film is in the audience. The film tells the story of two poor sisters named Ratiba (Karioka) and Karima (Faten Hamama). Ratiba is an ambitious dancer who’ll do anything (and anyone) to move up in life while her sister works as a nurse and takes care of their widowed mother played by Aziza Helmy. Long story (very) short, Taheya’s character marries an older man for his money, has a child then gets caught with her boyfriend, is divorced and the child is taken from her. She develops a terminal illness, goes on Hajj, comes back to Cairo and dies with her child in her arms surrounded by her forgiving family. Also starring were Mahmoud el Meliji,, Shokry Sarhan, Fardous Mohamed, Hussain Riad and Farid Shawki.
