Hayatim (1982) هياتم

This scene features Alexandria born dancer and actress Hayatim and is from the 1982 Egyptian film “Al Aqwyaa” (The Mighty or The Strongest الأقوياء). This is a drama with an all-star cast including Madiha Yousri, Ezzat El Alaily and Naglaa Fathi. The film also starred Rushdi Abaza who had been married to both Taheya Karioka and Samia Gamal. Rushdi Abaza died in 1980 during filming of this production and his remaining lines were spoken by well known Egyptian actor Salah Nazmi who’s never seen onscreen.

Azza Sherif (1983) عزة شريف

This scene is from the 1983 Egyptian film ‘Al Motasawel‘ (The Beggar المتسول) and features Egyptian born dancer Azza Sherif. The singer is Ahmed Adaweya. The film starred Adel Imam and Esaad Younes who play the bride and groom in this scene. The woman in the blue galabeya who tries to get up to join Azza Sherif is former dancer Hayatim who plays a leading role in the movie.
Trivia: Azza Sherif was born in 1947 and was married for several years to the Egyptian singer Katkot al Amir.

Zeinat Olwi (1958) زينات علوى

This is Alexandria born dancer Zeinat Olwi performing in a scene from the 1958 Egyptian film “This is Love” (Haza Howa al Hob هذا هو الحب ). Zeinat Olwi had an unhappy childhood and left Alexandria to move to Cairo. She started as one of Badia Masabni’s background dancers eventually becoming a soloist. She then moved on to dance with singer-comedian Shekuku. She made numerous film appearances initially in speaking roles but, as she considered herself a dancer first and foremost, she reverted to dancing roles only. Her final movie appearance was in 1969 in the film ‘Sabah Al Kheir ya Zawjati al Aziza’. This film was directed by Salah Abu Seif, an Egyptian director whose credits included “Shabab Emraa”(A Woman’s Youth 1956) which starred Taheya Karioka and “Al Wahsh”(The Monster 1954) starring Samia Gamal. Performances from all these movies can also be seen on this channel.
In this scene from “This is Love”, the unhappy bride is played by Lubna Abdelaziz while the mother of the bride sitting to her right is Fardous Mohamed. The distraught man is Yahia Shehin and with him are Mary Munib, Abdelmonem Ibrahim and, I think, Mahmoud Azmi. Meanwhile, the fathers’ of the bride and groom participate in the nikah ceremony.

Samia Gamal (1951) سامية جمال‎‎

The dancer in this scene is Egyptian born Samia Gamal performing in the 1951 film “The Beauty’s Cheek” (Al Ghad al Gamil خد الجميل). The singers are in a group sitting at the table dressed in pseudo-Lebanese garb and they come up to join her individually. In order of performance the singers are Suad Makkawi, Mahmoud Shekuku, and Abdel Aziz Mohamed. The film also starred Marie Munib and Hassan Fayek.

Taheya Karioka and Farid al Atrache (1942)

This is Taheya Karioka and Farid al Atrache in a scene from the 1942 Egyptian film, “Dreams of Youth” (أحلام الشباب Ahlam al Shabab). The film starred Farid al Atrache as a man, co-incidentally named Farid, who fancies his neighbour’s niece Elham (Madiha Yousri). He gets to know Elham by teaching her to play the piano. Elham’s parents have both died and now she lives with her aunt played by the wonderful Marie Munib. Taheya Karioka plays Bahia, a dancer who tries, but fails, to make Farid fall in love with her. The film also starred Hassan Fayek and Abbas Fares.

Lebleba (1985) لبلبة

This is Ninochka Manoug Kupelian better known as Egyptian actress and dancer Lebleba. In this scene she’s performing in the 1985 movie ‘Mahatet al Ons’ (Social Station محطة الانس). The film starred Samir Ghanem as the owner of a desert service station who uses nails placed on the road to make drivers stop to use his workshop. The film also starred Said Saleh and Younes Shelaby.
Trivia: Lebleba is the cousin of child actress Feyrouz (Perouz Artin Kalfayan) and singer/dancer Nelly (Nelly Artin Kalfayan).

Taheya Karioka (1942) كاريوكا‎ تحية

This is Taheya Karioka in a wedding scene from the 1942 Egyptian film “Dreams of Youth” (أحلام الشباب Ahlam al Shabab). She plays the part of Bahia, a dancer who tries but fails to make Farid al Atrache fall in love with her, In this scene she’s hired unknowingly to dance at the wedding of Farid and Elham played by Madiha Yousri. Everything goes along fine until Taheya realises who the groom is. The bride’s aunt is played by the wonderful Marie Munib who’s on the left of screen with the feather in her hair.
