Taheya Karioka and Gina (1942)



This is Taheya Karioka performing in a scene from the 1942 Egyptian film “Dreams of Youth” (أحلام الشباب Ahlam al Shabab). The film starred Farid al Atrache as a man, co-incidentally named Farid, who fancies his neighbour’s niece Elham (Madiha Yousri). He gets to know Elham by teaching her to play the piano.  Elham’s parents have both died and now she lives with her aunt played by the wonderful Marie Munib.  Taheya Karioka plays Bahia, a dancer who tries but fails to make Farid fall in love with her.  The film also starred Hassan Fayek and Abbas Fares.
Trivia: The ‘Haaretz’ newspaper in Israel reports that in September 1962 the Edison Theatre in Jerusalem screened the Farid al Atrache film “Eternal Melody”(Lahn al khulud”). The audience was incensed to discover that Farid’s songs were not presented in their entirety in the movie and demanded their money back. When this was refused they smashed seats and broke windows in the theatre lobby.

Nagwa Fouad (1967) فؤاد نجوى

This clip features Nagwa Fouad in a scene from the 1967 Egyptian comedy “Shantet Hamza” (Hamza’s Briefcase شنطة حمزة). The film starred Amin al Heneidi in the title role and tells the story of a gang who decide to steal a briefcase belonging to a rich casino owner but end up stealing the wrong bag. The film also starred Soheir al Morshedi, Lebleba and Abdelmonem Madbouli who was one of the film’s writers.

Nagwa Fouad (1969) فؤاد نجوى

This is Egyptian dancer (and later in her career, actress) Nagwa Fouad, performing in a scene from the 1969 film ‘Seraa al Mohtarefin’ (Battle of the Professionals or Professional Conflict صراع المحترفين). The film starred Rushdi Abaza and Naglaa Fathi who are the couple sitting on the sofa. Also starring were Tawfik al Deqn and Kawthar Shafik.

There’s something for everyone including some khaleegi, in this performance by Egyptian dance legend Nagwa Fouad.  The clip is in two parts.

Nagwa Fouad (1961) فؤاد نجوى

This is dancer and actress Nagwa Fouad performing in the 1961 Egyptian drama ‘Lematha Aish’ (‘Why I’m Living’ لماذا أعيش) which starred Shokry Sarhan, Suad Hosni and Mohsen Sarhan. The singer in this clip is Hosni Sherif.

Nagwa Fouad (1958) فؤاد نجوى

Nagwa Fouad dances in a scene from the 1958 Egyptian film ‘Touha’ (توحة) which starred Hind Rostom in the title role. Hind Rostom is the blonde lady who enters the bar wearing a melaya. Also starring were Zahrat al Ola, Ahmed Saeed and Mohsen Sarhan. The male dancer at the beginning of the clip is pretty good too isn’t he?

Nagwa Fouad dances in another scene from the 1960 Egyptian film ‘Ihtares min al Hob’ (Farewell to Love وداعا يا حب). The singer with her is Muharam Fuad. The film also starred Mariam Fakhr El Din, Khalil Bader El Dein and Wedad Hamdi.

Nagwa Fouad (1972) shamadan

This scene from the 1972 Egyptian film ‘Imtithal’ (إمتثال) features a shamadan performance by Nagwa Fouad. The film, which is non-fiction, starred Magda al Kahtib as Imtithal Fawzi who was a popular Egyptian bellydancer and singer in Cairo the 1930s. Imtithal was performing her regular act in the Bosphorus Nightclub (Casino al Busfur) in Cairo one evening in May 1936 when the lights in the nightclub suddenly went out. There was confusion and panic in the darkness and when the lights were turned back on club goers were shocked to see her lying on stage dying from stab wounds. Later investigation showed that she had been killed by a gang for failing to meet their demands for protection money.  Also starring were Adel Adham, Samir Sabri, Katkouta,  Naima el Soghaiar and Nour al Sherif.
