This is dancer and actress Nagwa Fouad in a second performance from the 1961 Egyptian drama ‘Lematha Aish’ (‘Why I’m Living’ لماذا أعيش) which starred Shokry Sarhan, Suad Hosni and Mohsen Sarhan.
This is Egyptian dancer Hayatim performing in a scene from the 1989 movie ‘Al Wohoush al Saghera’ (الوحوش الصغيرة Little Monsters). The movie starred actor Farouk el Feshawi and Soheir Ramzy who’s the woman in white who briefly dances with Hayatim.
Horeya Mohamed is the dancer wearing trousers and shirt in this clip from the 1949 Egyptian film ‘Assir al Ayoun’ aka ‘Assir el Aioun’ (اسير العيون The Prisoner of Her Eyes).
The lady in the white dress who corrects Horeya’s dom and tek is legendary Egyptian comedienne Marie Munib who was born in Syria (or Lebanon) in 1905 as Marie Habib Salim Ibrahim (or Nasr). She moved with her family to Cairo when she was very young and starting her stage life working as a dancer in Rod (Road) al Farag, an area of Cairo that was known at the time for its many nightclubs. Marie Munib worked with several theatre companies including that of Naguib al Rihany and then had a long career in Egyptian movies often playing a tyrannical mother-in-law. She married actor Fawzi Munib when she was probably only 13 or 14 and, despite their divorce in 1935 and her later remarriage, she retained his name. Mary Munib died in Cairo in 1969.
Trivia: Mary Munib was the grandmother of well known Egyptian singer Aamer Munib who passed away in 2011.
Egyptian born/Greek descent dancer Katy is featured in this scene from the 1954 Egyptian film ‘Khalak ma Allah’ (also spelt ‘Halik ma Allah’, meaning ‘Stay with God’ or ‘Trust in God’ خليك مع الله). While in this clip Katy’s performance isn’t bellydance and the music certainly isn’t, never mind, we could just change the music and a few of the movements and its raks sharki LOL. The music is so familiar but I can’t think of the name and now the tune is stuck in my head.
The film starred Ismail Yassin, Mahmoud al Meliji, Zomoroda, Zeinat Sedki, Abdel Wares Asar and Nadia Riaz who doesn’t seem to have been in any other films save this one.
This is golden era bellydancer Katy (1927-1980) in a scene from the 1954 Egyptian film ‘El Ard el Tayeba’ (The Good Earth الارض الطيبة) which starred Kamal Al Shennawi and Mariam Fakhr Eddine. They play the couple shown in this clip. Also starring were Hussein Riyad, Abdul Salem al Nabulsi and Zouzou Madi. The female singer is Suad Mekkawi and the male dancer wearing the top hat is Omar al Gizawy.
Naima Akef in a scene from the 1949 Egyptian film ‘Sitt al Bayt’ (Lady of the House ست البيت). From what I’ve been able to find out, this was her first credited movie role. The film starred Faten Hamama (who was married to Omar Sharif for many years). Also starring were Emad Hamdi, Thuraya Fakri, Hosna Soloman and Zeinab Sedki. Zeinab (with a ‘b’) Sedki is often confused with Zeinat (with a ‘t’) Sedki the comedienne from the same era who often appeared in films with Ismail Yassine.
The singer in this scene is Abdul Aziz Mahmoud while Emad Hamdi is at the bar getting hammered.
This is a promo piece shown on tv here in Qatar featuring quick clips of many of the ‘big name’ bellydancers from the Golden Era.
