This is Nagwa Fouad performing in the 1972 Egyptian comedy film ‘Adwaa el Madina’ (City Lights أضواء المدينة) which starred Shadia, Ahmad Mazhar, Adel Imam, Ibrahim Saafan and Abdel Monem Ibrahim. Despite having big stars, many songs and a big budget, the film failed to make an impact with audiences.
Unfortunately I have no idea which Egyptian movie this short clip is from. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
This is Egyptian dancer Nadia Hamdi performing in the Syrian film ‘Sah al Nom’ (النوم صح Good Morning) which was released in 1975. The film starred Syrian comedian Duraid Lahhem, Nagy Gabr (1940-2009) and Nihad Kalai (1928-1992).
Background: The actor who comes in with the tray on his head is Yassin Bakoush who was killed in 2013 during the fighting in Damascus. He was 75.
Mona al Said (منى السعيد) dances in a scene from the 1986 Egyptian film ‘Koum El Shoqafa’ (كوم الشقافة) which starred Said Saleh, Magda Nour El Din, Hisham Abdel Hamid and Shahera. In this scene Mona al Said is in the audience in a nightclub and is persuaded by the singer to get up and dance. Mona could dance in a sack and still mesmerise the audience!
Background trivia: Koum al Shoqafa/Kom al Shukafa are ancient catacombs near Alexandria in Egypt. The name means ‘Hill of Shards’ and dates back to the time when people used to bring food in pottery containers to the catacombs as offerings. As they didn’t want to take the containers home again they would break them and leave the pieces (shards) at the site.
The dancer is Egyptian legend Taheya Karioka and the male singer is Mohamed Fawzi.
Egyptian actress Nahed Yousry (ناهد يسري) dances in a scene from the 1971 Syrian movie ‘Wahid za’ed Wahid’ (One Plus One واحد + واحد). Nahed Yousry (not to be confused with Nahed Sherif) is often remembered for her ‘racy’ film roles in the early 1970s when she was based in Beirut. In 1974 she was involved in an incident, I understand it was an automobile crash, and she retired from screen acting for many years as a result. She returned eventually but retired from acting in 1990.
This film starred Suhair al Morshidi, Talan Hamdi (1941-2012) and Syrian actor/comedian Duraid Lahham.
Bellydancer Nadia Gamal in a scene from the 1965 film ‘Al Siba wa’l Jamal’ (Youth and Beauty الصبا والجمال ). The film starred Lebanese diva Sabah along with Muharram Fouad and Shafiq Hashim who was Nadia Gamal’s husband at the time. Nadia Gamal married Shafiq Hashim in 1958, the marriage ending in divorce nine years later. Depending on who tells the story, bellydancer Nadia Gamal was born Maria Kariadis in 1935 (or 1936 or 1937) in Alexandia (or Beirut) to parents who were Lebanese or Greek or Italian or Egyptian. Whatever the facts, she was a wonderful dancer. Sadly she died in Beirut in 1990 of complications while receiving treatment for cancer.
Trivia: (1) Shafiq Hashim was singer Karem Mahmoud’s band leader for several years. There’s a clip of Nagwa Fouad dancing while Karem Mahmoud sings ‘Samra ya Samra’ on this channel.
(2) Muharram Fouad was one of Taheya Karioka’s 14 husbands. I think he was number 8 but can anyone confirm please?
