Najwa Sultan and Azza Sharif (1977)

The two dancers in this clip are Najwa Sultan (نجوى سلطان) and Azza Sharif (عزة شريف) in a scene from the 1977 film ‘Ah Ya Leil Ya Zaman’ (آه يا ليل يا زمن).
The singer with the gorgeous voice is the late Warda Al Jazairia who played the leading role in the film.  Adel Adham and Samir Ghanem are the two men sitting on the pink sofa in the clip.
The song in this clip, ‘Leil Ya Layali’ was composed by Baligh Hamdi who was Warda’s second husband.   Warda plays Faten, the daughter of a rich man, who learns on his death that all his assets have been lost and she blames the man who tells her the bad news.  She travels to Paris, finds work as a dental nurse and turns to singing. As a singer, she is (of course) a great success and falls in love with the dentist who’s already married. Long story short, the dentist goes back to his wife and Warda’s character continues with her singing career.

Nagwa Sultan (1975) نجوى سلطان

Nagwa Sultan is the bellydancer in this scene from the 1975 film ‘Mamnou fi leylat al dokhla’ (Forbidden on the Wedding Night فيلم ممنوع فى ليلة الدخله ). The film is a comedy and tells the story of Tahseen (Adel Imam) who wants to marry Mona (Soheir Ramzi) but Mona’s domineering mother Zareefa (Nabila al Sayed) is against the marriage as she thinks her daughter can do better. One day while out walking Zareefa falls through an open manhole and drowns returning as a ghost who can only be seen by Tahseen. She’s flying through the air in part of this clip.  Shortly afterwards Tahseen and Mona marry and Zareefa’s widower Ashour (Mohammad Reda) wastes no time marrying his long time mistress Zoba, played by bellydancer Nagwa Fouad. Zoba and Ashour’s wedding party is shown in this scene. The man sitting between the bride and groom is Egyptian comedian Seif Allah Mokhtar. The singer is Shafik Galal (1929-2000).

Nagwa Sultan (1984)

Nagwa Sultan is the dancer and Galal Shafik is the singer in this scene from the 1984 Egyptian film ‘Hadi Badi’ (translates as being like the English ‘eeni meeni’. There’s a really interesting article about Nagwa Sultan on ‘The Gilded Serpent’

The film tells the story of Dr Saber played by Samir Ghanem who has married a fellow doctor, Laila played by Dalal Abdel Aziz.  The marriage took place overseas and on his return to Egypt Saber keeps the marriage secret as he was supposed to marry Subia, the lesser educated niece of Khader played by Farid Shawki.  In this scene he’s marrying Subhia.

Trivia: Two of the stars of this film, Samir Ghanem and Dala Abdel Aziz are married to each other.  Their two daughters are both successful actors.
