Zeinat Olwi is the dancer in this scene from the 1954 Egyptian film ‘Pity My Tears’ (Erham Damoui ارحم دموعي). Zeinat Olwi was born in Alexandria, Egypt, eventually moving to Cairo where she danced in Badia Masabni’s nightclub, moving later to the band which supported singer and actor Mahmoud Shekoko (محمود شكوكو). She started her film career in 1951 and seems to have made her last film appearance in 1970. She died in 1988.
The film was directed by Henry Barakat and starred Yahia Shaheen, Faten Hamama (Mrs Omar Sharif) and Rushdy Abaza (who’d been married to Samia Gamal, Sabah and earlier Taheya Karioka).
The dancer in this clip is Alexandria born Zeinat Olwi (زينات علوي) who performed in 35 (or so) Egyptian films. Born in 1930 Zeinat Olwi started her career in the Cairo nightclub owned by Badia Masabni and also had a long connection with Egyptian comedian Mahmoud Shekuku and his band. Zeinat Olwi only had spoken lines in one or two films before she decided that she wasn’t comfortable being an actress and preferred to be strictly a dancer. She passed away in Cairo in 1988.
The scene shown here is from the 1953 Egyptian film ‘My Sweetheart and I’ (Ana wa Habibi انا و حبيبي literally ‘I and my sweetheart’). To the left of screen is Mounir Murad and to the right is Mohammed al Tabie who regularly played the character of a naïve Saiidi boy often in tandem with Sayed Bedier.
The film starred singer/actress Shadia along with Abdel Salem al Nabulsi, the wonderful comic actress Zeinat Sedki and Mounir Murad who was the brother of Leila Murad.
Zeinat Olwi dancing in a scene from ‘Naharak Saeed’ (Good Morning نهارك سعيد) a 1955 film starring Abdel Salam Al Nabulsi, Zeinat Sedki, Mounir Mourad (Leila Mourad’s brother) and Seraj Mounir. The female singer in this clip is Suad Makawi, and the actor with her is Zaki Karioka (زكى كاريوكا ). (I assume this is the same ‘Zaki Karioka’ who was the drummer for Taheya but can anyone confirm please?)
Zeinat Olwi is the bellydancer in this scene from the 1959 Egyptian comedy film ‘Secret Police’ (البوليس السرى ) which starred Ismail Yassin, Abdel Salem Al Nabulsi, Zeinat Sedki and Riad Algosbjy. The film is also known as ‘Ismail Yassin in the Secret Police’.
Egyptian born dancer Zeinat Olwi performs in a scene from the 1969 Egyptian film ‘Sabah el kheir ya zawgati el aziza’ (Good Morning My Dear Wife صباح الخير يا زوجتى العزيزة) which starred Nelly, Salah Zulfikar and Khayria Ahmed. The film also starred former bellydancer Taheya Karioka who was in an acting only role.
