This is Egyptian dancer Zizi Mustafa in green and gold. She uses a veil throughout the piece and as you can see, the clip’s from a long, long time ago.
Trivia: There’s often confusion with the late Zizi Mustafa, an Egyptian actress who died in 2008. The former bellydancer Zizi Mustafa is very much alive and is the mother of actress Mena Shalabi.
This is Zizi Mustafa performing in a scene from the 1985 Egyptian film ‘El Taghiya’ (الطاغية The Tyrant) which starred Ezzat Al Alayli, Farouk al Fishawi and Leila Elwi.
There was a very well known Egyptian actress, also named Zizi Mustafa (though her real name was Zeinab Mostafa Nasr) who died in 2008. The two Zizi Mustafas are often mixed up and even Google shows dancer Zizi as having died though she’s very much alive! Former bellydancer Zizi Mustafa is the mother of Egyptian actress Menna Shelabi
This scene is from the 1969 Egyptian comedy ‘Nashal Raghm Anfoh’ (A Pickpocket Despite His Nose نشال رغم أنفه). The film starred Nadia Lutfi as a movie star named Samia and Amin el Heneidi (1925-1986) as Sayed, the pickpocket of the film’s title.
The clip starts with dancing by Alexandria born Zeinat Olwi (1930-1988) who’s accompanied by singer Shafik Galal. The man at the bar wearing a white waistcoat is actor Tawfik al Deqn. The second dancer is Katkoota (قطقوطة). I’m pretty sure the third dancer who’s performing at the wedding is Zizi Mustafa though any confirmation would be much appreciated. The singers in the wedding scene are ‘The 3 Stagelights’ (“Tholaathi Adwaa al Masrah” فرقة ثلاثي أضواء المسرح التي). Of this trio Samir Ghanem (the tall bald one) went on to have a hugely successful career as a solo comedy actor, George Sedhom (the one in the suit) retired many years ago due to on-going ill health and El Deif Ahmad (the young one) died in 1970.
Trivia: Dancers may be interested to know that Nadia Lufti, the star of this movie, later played Badia Masabni in the 1975 Egyptian bio-pic of Masabni’s life. Fouad al Mohandes played the part of famous Egyptian actor Naguib el Rihani who was Masabni’s husband from 1925 until 1949.
Zizi Mustafa dances in a scene from the 1983 Egyptian comedy film ‘Massoud Saeed Leh?’ (Why’s Massoud Happy? مسعود سعيد ليه). The singer is Fatma Eid (فاطمة عيد). The film starred Wahed Seif, Said Saleh and Essad Younes and tells the story of Massoud a poor man who finds a large sum of money in a bag, returns it and is rewarded. The owner of the money is murdered and the money is stolen. Massoud was the last person seen with the victim etc but it all ends happily.
Bellydancer and actress Zizi Mustafa dancing in a scene from a 1984 Egyptian film titled ‘Al Mahzouz’ (The Lucky المحظوظ ) which starred Saeed Saleh, Farouk al Fishawi and Essad Younes. The movie is about two real estate agents battling each other for a piece of land. The music Zizi is dancing to is not the same as the musicians are playing or miming to. The piece you can hear is ‘El dooma wa tekka’ by Khamis Henkish. I think it was on the ‘Delta Festival’ tape (Yes, tape. That’s how long ago it was!)
There’s a lot of confusion as there are two ‘Zizi Mustafas’. One of the Zizi’s was an actress who died in 2008. The other Zizi is the former bellydancer who is still very much alive and who’s the mother of actress Mena Shalaby .
Zizi Mustafa dances in a scene from the 1968 Egyptian film ‘Hawwa wa’al Qerd’ (Eve & the Monkey حواء والقرد) which starred Suad Hosny, Mohamed Awad and Ahmed Ramzy. This ‘dance of the seven veils’ scene is a figment of Suad Hosny’s character’s imagination.
Trivia: Adli Kaseb is in the film too, you may remember him as the evil brother-in-law in ‘Al Safira Aziza’.
The fabulous Zizi Mustafa in a scene from the 1984 comedy ‘Meen feena al harami’ (or Min fina al harami – Who amongst us is the thief?). Later in the routine she uses a cane (assaya). This film’s also known as ‘Double Trouble’ as the lead actor Adel Imam (sometimes written Emam) plays a double role as twins. One of the twins is a thief and the other a regular guy.
Zizi Mustafa dances in the 1985 film ‘Saad al Yatim’ (Saad the Orphan سعد اليتيم) which starred Ahmed Zaki, Najlaa Fathy, Farid Shawki and Mahmoud Morsy. There are two scenes in this clip, first a party and the second is a ‘blink and you’ll miss it’ scene where she uses a shamadan.
Zizi Mustafa in a scene from the 1974 film ‘Al Muhim al Hob’ (Love is Important) which starred Nahed Sharif, Adel Imam and Emad Hamdy.
Keep your eye on the actor playing the part of the conductor – he’s a show on his own!
